He became an accountant at the age of 21 and worked for a long time with his father's company, Frank Davis & Sons, one of the leading accounting firms in London
His uncle, John Davis, was also an accountant at F. D. & S., and Fred took over control of the firm when his uncle retired in the late 1920s.
